Our working memory can only hold a limited number of concepts (or ‘chunks’). We can improve our thinking capacity by increasing the complexity of the chunks. Mental models are a great way to do this - they distill complex phenomena that from first principles take many chunks to grasp.
Learning can be thought of as building up progressively more complex chunks. Note-taking is one approach to this.
